Gladys grabbed the opportunity and wrote to Mrs. Lawson, an elderly widow, was working as a missionary in China when she made an invitation for another missionary to join and help her. She was working at that time as a parlor maid for Sir Francis Younghusband (the famous British military officer and explorer of Asia) when she heard of the request written by a certain Mrs. This rejection did not stop her from pursuing her dream of serving the Lord as a missionary in China. In addition, she was already older than most applicants at that time, so she was not allowed to continue the training. It seemed Gladys did not have the aptitude to learn Mandarin. She was accepted to study a preliminary course for missionaries, but then she hit a roadblock. ![]() Aylward finally worked up the courage to send an application to the China Inland Mission. Her humble occupation, however, did not stop her from dreaming of becoming a missionary. She was only 14 when she had to quit school and work as a housemaid to help her family. Gladys’s family came from a humble background. Her parents, Thomas John and Rosina Aylward, belonged to the Anglican church. Once they came back she would boil the vegetables and they would have healthy food. She took the water from the river, made a fire, and boiled the water while the kids found vegetables. Now time to cross the river, but how? Gladys and the children waited and waited for someone to pass by on a boat but it took forever. When it started to get dark, they stopped hiking and found a place to sleep she always found a good place for the children so they would have energy the next morning. Also when they found food or ate food that they brought, Gladys would only eat a bite or two and the children would get the rest. ![]() So that made it even harder for her because she had to carry extra weight. About every 45 minutes she switched kids. Gladys led the children through the mountains and always had a kid on her back. She was brave, brave enough to lead the children through the mountains. Gladys was accepted as a missionary when she became 73 years old. Because she didn’t get that job, Gladys worked at different places until she was accepted as a missionary. Gladys failed to pass examination so she wasn’t able to be a member. At age 26 she became a probationer the China Inland Mission Center in London. Gladys was born on Februin Edmonton, London.
